Summary

John and Mary Brady have been willed the “negro man Stephen,” 22 years old, by Mary’s father, the late John Buckey. The Bradys emancipate Stephen.

John Brady & wife To Stephen (Black man)     

Whereas John Buckey late of Ohio County Virginia deceased did by his last Will and Testament, direct that several Slaves in said Will named should be free as they respectively arrived at the age of twenty-eight years, and in the mean time be sold for money or divided amongst his children at the option of the said children And Whereas in the division of said slaves one named Stephen fell to John Brady and Mary his wife which said Mary was one of the children and heirs at law of the said John Buckey deceased. And whereas the said John Brady and Mary his wife have reasons for desiring that the said Stephen should be free at this time Now know all men by these presents that we John Brady and Mary Brady Do manumit, emancipate, set free, and forever discharge, the said Stephen from all further services that may be due us from the said negro man Stephen, who came to us as aforesaid by the said last will and Testament of John Buckey deceased in manner af d . The said Stephen being a dark yellow man of common weight about Five feet, seven and a half or eight inches high, and is about this time about twenty-two-years old, more or less. In Testimony whereof we have hereto set our hands and seals, this 31 day of Augt. 1835
