Benjamin Hassell of Alabama, “for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar,” frees    Caroline McAlfrey and releases all claims to her two sons.

Benjamin D. Hassell Deed of Emancipation To Caroline McAlfrey               

Know all men by these presents, that I Benjamin D. Hassell of Montgomery County, State of Alabama for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar, to me in hand paid and from motives of benevolence and humanity have manumitted and hereby manumit and set free from slavery my negro girl Caroline formerly of the County and State aforesaid, but at this time residing in the City of Pittsburgh, County of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, She being a bright mulatto about twenty six years of age and married to one Lewis McAlfrey and the mother of two boys the eldest by the name of Alexander, the younger Abdallah, which boys aforesaid, I the said Hassell do likewise release all claim whatsoever. And I do hereby give grant and release unto the said Caroline and the two children aforesaid, all my right, title, interest and claim of, in and to her person, labour and service, and of, and in and to the estate and property which she may hereafter acquire or obtain, In Testimony Whereof, I have this day hereto set my hand and seal, May the twenty fourth A. D. 1844.

City of Pittsburgh SS: This the 24th day of May A. D. 1844. personally appeared before me the subscriber, an Alderman in and for said the City aforesaid the above named Benjamin D. Hassell and acknowledged the above Indenture to be his act and deed, and desired the same might be recorded as such according to law. Witness my hand and seal  the day and year Foresaid
