Certificate of George Martin    

State of Pennsylvania City of Pittsburgh S.S. Know all men by these presents that on the eleventh day of May A D. one thousand eight hundred and thirty five before me Robert Christy Esquire an alderman in and for said city personally appeared George Martin and Perry Travis, the said George Martin being a colored man of rather light complexion about five feet nined inches high, tolerably stout built with a scar on the inside of the ankle joint of the right leg and a scar on the inside of the wrist of the right arm and about twenty three years of age, and the said Perry Travis being by me duly sworn doth depose and say that he has been acquainted with the said George Martin since he the said George Martin was not more than one year old that he the said George Martin was born a free man in the County of Westmoreland State of Pennsylvania and never was in bondage to any person and that is is now free and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free colored man.
Sworn and subscribed before me the date aforesaid and I do hereby certify the above description of the said George Martin to be correct from personal observation
